New TV Ad on Traffic Impacts of Proposed 33,000 Houses
The Campaign for Loudoun’s Future launched
a television ad yesterday, days before the final public hearing
on a proposal to add 33,000 houses to the County’s growth
plan. This proposal would be more than a 700% increase in the existing
growth plan for this central part of Loudoun County, just west of
South Riding and just south of Ashburn. The current growth plan
recommends 4,608 houses in this area.
The ad, airing hundreds of times on major channels such as CNN
and Fox, focuses on one of the most critical impacts of this proposed
massive growth increase: hundreds of thousands of more cars on the
roads. The Virginia Department of Transportation did an analysis
of the impact of this major change to Loudoun’s growth plan
earlier this year and warned local officials that the proposal would
create gridlock not only in southeastern Loudoun but in neighboring
Fairfax and Prince William counties as well. VDOT is in the process
of updating the study as their dire predictions didn’t take
into account the full 33,000 additional homes now proposed, but
rather a smaller amount.
Residents from across the County are strongly opposed to such major
changes to Loudoun’s growth plan that will create traffic
gridlock and require billions of dollars of infrastructure. Community
opposition has been strong since these proposals were unveiled a
few years ago and has only grown.
The public hearing before the County Board of Supervisors is currently
scheduled as item #12, for the October 10th general public hearing
that begins at 6:30 pm.
