From 2000 to 2004, Loudoun County grew by 41%, and 1 in 4 new Washington
Metro Area residents moved to Loudoun. That means Loudoun receives 49 new
residents per day and 3,500 new students each year.
At this rate, growth in Loudoun is accounting for approximately 25%
of Virginia’s total growth and 20% of the Washington region’s growth.
If this rate of growth continues, Loudoun’s population will double in a
mere 6-7 years.
As an article
by the Loudoun Times-Mirror reported on 1/5/06, "According to a Metropolitan
Washington Council of Governments (MWCOG) estimate, the population of Loudoun
County is projected to grow 87.6% from 169,600 people in 2000 to 318,100 people
in 2010. In comparison, Fairfax County is projected to grow by 16.8%, while the
Northern Virginia region overall is projected to grow 27.8% in the same time period."
On 1/26/06, the Washington Post
reported that Loudoun County lead all Virginia counties in growth. The University
of Virginia's Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service estimated that Loudoun grew
by a "phenomenal" 82,700 residents, or 49%, in the past five years.
The article went on to report that, "The new estimates come as little
surprise to school and government officials already deeply involved in trying
to manage the consequences of the region's relentless growth. In Loudoun County,
school officials are projecting a continued population climb through 2010; over
the next five years, the county estimates, more than a third of the state's school
enrollment increase will be in Loudoun.
In the past 15 years, the county has doubled the number of schools and more
than tripled the number of students, to about 47,000 this year. Six more schools
are scheduled to open for the 2007-08 school year."
